The Abruzzo region is breathtaking with its high mountains, national parks for hiking and skiing, and crystal blue waters of the Adriatic Sea. We traced the roots of my great-grandparents and met a long-lost cousin who still lives in the home where my great-grandfather was born. We sipped the local wine, Montepulciano D’Abruzzo, while watching the sun set over the mountains. The centerpiece is a large wooden table that hosts dinners for guests and friends. It provides ample work space and at this table, we spent hours happily preparing homemade pasta, gnocchi, and a delicate sweet ravioli served with a rich meat ragu. We compared Scorpelle recipes, and I was amazed to find I preferred my family’s recipe. My great grandmother would have been proud. Let's Go – Italy Always Feels Like Coming Home Rome: The Eternal City, Always Fresh I always recommend arriving a day early for any group trip—to leave room for travel delays and get that first jet-lagged day behind you. Most flights from the U.S. arrive in the morning, so the best thing to do is drop your bags and hit the streets. And Rome is perfect for that. One of my favorite cities, Rome is a place where you can walk a single block and see ancient ruins, baroque churches, art deco facades, and modern design—all layered together. We stayed at 47 Hotel, a reliable 4-star spot with compact rooms, a great rooftop bar, and an ideal location. Over cappuccinos, we powered through jet lag and took off on foot. Just down the street was the Mouth of Truth, made famous in one of my favorite Audrey Hepburn films, Roman Holiday. We didn’t brave the line, but I loved spotting the nearby temples featured in the film. Crossing the Tiber, we found ourselves in Trastevere, joining locals on the riverside bike and walking path. Let's Go – Italy Always Feels Like Coming Home We visited Argiolas Winery, just north of Cagliari—family-run for three generations. There, we discovered Vermentino, a dry white wine with the bright, saline notes only sea-kissed vines can produce. It quickly became our favorite of the trip. We toured the cool underground barrel rooms and ended with an incredible lunch of typical Sardinian dishes. The standout? Culurgiones—plump pasta stuffed with potatoes, pecorino, and mint, (my favorite pasta of the entire trip.) The sauce had a distinctive sweetness solely from the natural sweetness of the tomatoes- not a drop of sugar! Then came Porceddu, a traditional roast pig, and for dessert, a whipped ricotta mousse with orange zest and powdered sugar. Now run by three generations of women, it’s a total immersion in Sardinian art, food, and tradition. Every corner is filled with vibrant color and creativity. We visited the artisan shop, watched the ancient art of traditional bread making, and were entertained by a performance of traditional dancers. At Hotel Cala di Volpe, the most iconic property on the coast (and a 1977 James Bond filming location), we sipped fresh Bellinis with a view. Our bartender, a fellow Andrea, was extremely proud of his bellini recipe and beamed as he told us that Adele is a fan. A private yacht cruise on the Tyrrhenian Sea capped off the day. Let's Go – Italy Always Feels Like Coming Home The Tarot Garden & the Argentario Coast A major highlight for me was Il Giardino dei Tarocchi (The Tarot Garden), a fantastical sculpture park created by artist Niki de Saint Phalle. My mother is a fan of her work, and I had long wanted to visit. The towering, Gaudí-like tarot figures are made of mirror mosaic, Murano glass, and ceramics. It’s vibrant and overwhelming in the best way—especially knowing that Niki lived inside the mirrored Empress while working on it. Don’t miss going inside—it's surreal. In quieter corners, the garden invites reflection. Statues like the Hermit and Death struck a deep, personal chord, reminding me of my father, who passed away a couple of years ago. Just 30 minutes away is the Argentario coast, a former island now connected to the mainland. Porto Ercole is a small, elegant harbor town, blending working fishing boats with private yachts. Among the most famous were Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall. The Matisse Museum in Nice is one of my favorite museums. It’s located in a 16th Century Villa in the Cimiez Gardens where Matisse often frequented. The museum houses much of Matisse’s personal collection of artwork and objects which were brought over from his studio in Nice. It is intimate and contains his furniture and artist’s tools. Being amongst his belongings and tools, I felt Matisse's spirit, picturing him sitting at his easel with his paints. This Villa happens to be of the many incredible locations of one of my favorite movies-- Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was filmed here. Although the town of the film, Beaumont-sur-Mer, was made up, it was filmed in several quintessential French riviera locations. Upon arrival, I sat, exhausted from travel, on my private balcony drinking Greek wine… in amazement that I was actually here! Athens is a large city of 4 million people with a lot of hustle and bustle. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this island and you don’t have to participate or be surrounded by the party culture, especially at this time of year. I loved the little shops, art galleries, and maze-like cobbled streets of the Chora, but was surprised by the crowds even though it was late September. Do note, the cruise ships let out in the Chora so this is where you see the most crowds. So the best time to come is after 5p, when you can watch the sunset as everyone gets back on the ships. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56ff090cb6aa607cbb856c50/98bb495f-8525-49c4-b566-5ba728118d25/IMG_8677.jpeg BLOG - Destination Greece - The highlight for me was the 2-hour speedboat trip to Delos, the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. The entire island is an archaeological site, and nobody is allowed to stay on the island. With such a short time, we had to choose between visiting the site or taking a swim in the crystal blue waters of the Aegean Sea with the ancient island as a stunning backdrop. To swim was an easy choice, and I was in my happy place-- ancient ruins and the sea! She led us with that authentic motherly tough love that got a group of 10 giggly travel advisors to whip up a multi-course fresh meal in only an HOUR! We went home with all the recipes and I had so much fun replicating the meal with my family. On our last day of the trip, we enjoyed a catamaran cruise around the caldera. The plan was to stop in the sulphur-rich hot springs off a volcanic island in the center of the caldera. Santorini can be quite windy and we were unable to access the spot that day.
